Spite: Shut Up and Take It Like A Man (4 of 6) ![]() ![]() Speaking of stunted social growth, now seems like a good time to bring up the US Navy. "Don't ask, don't tell." That's the new policy, but the Navy's old policy is still in use - just kept in the closet. Tim McVey is currently being court-martialed under the allegation that he is gay. The US Navy discovered this information by querying AOL about Tim McVey's private personal account information. In doing so the Navy broke the Federal Law which states that private information cannot be obtained without a court order. In addition, the "Don't Ask" policy currently in place means the Navy should not have been asking about, or even pursuing, such information unless the service-person in question had made a clear public statement. When asked by reporters to share the information that led the Navy to believe McVey was gay, Lt.Cmdr. Hal Pitman, Navy spokesman had this to say: "...privacy laws prevent the Pentagon from releasing the information..." National Public Radio has preserved this little bit of hypocrisy in RealAudio for all to hear. (Cue the sound file up to 2 minutes 15 seconds.)
